One of the groundbreaking things about the iPhone is that it combined an innovative phone with much-beloved iPod features, and that fact was not lost on Palm as they prepared the Pre for release.
It appears that Palm has got iTunes fooled, because the Palm Pre is detected as an iPod when connected to a computer. My entire music library (with the exception of DRMed tracks bought from the iTunes store, which still sells some labels’ music encrypted) was quickly synced onto the Pre, and at first glance, the music appears and plays fine on the Pre. One less reason to carry an iPhone…
